Responsibilities

FMC is looking for a Scientist in the Agricultural Solutions Herbicide Discovery Biology group at our Stine research facility in Newark, Delaware. The mission of the Herbicide Discovery group is to discover new herbicide active ingredients qualified for commercial development. Research Investigator identifies, assesses and develops new scientific concepts and/or technologies to provide solutions to identified problems. He/she manages technical projects, coordinating with other professionals across varying disciplines and support personnel to accomplish objectives. He/she defines scientific approach to problems, develops hypotheses, tests them to lead projects to logical conclusions.

 

The Research Investigator provides strong biological technical results and leadership to Herbicide Discovery process. The Herbicide Discovery Research Investigator generates extensive biological results through a series of tiered screens and special tests, interprets and reports the results and works closely with synthesis chemists, biochemists and environmental scientists in a team environment to optimize lead area chemistry. Development, validation and implementation of new screens also compliments these activities.  

 

The successful Research Investigator should have a good understanding of current and evolving weed control practices in multiple market regions and crops and will apply this knowledge to the assessment of new herbicide active ingredients. The Research Investigator will generate greenhouse and field biological results and integrate this information with mode of action, environmental fate, crop and weed metabolism and other topics generated by others on the team to discover superior new product candidates. The position calls for active networking with FMC regional field development specialists and marketing teams as well as strong interactions with the academic weed/crop science communities.

Required Education

Qualified candidates will have a Ph.D in a relevant scientific area such as Weed Science, Agronomy, or Plant Physiology with 4-5 years agronomic experience.

  • Experience in developing research programs which are technically demanding and effectively integrate critical technologies to apply new technologies broadly
  • Experience in operating in an unstructured environment and define novel research approaches to complex scientific or technical problem
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective networks to accomplish work
  • Experience in working as an individual and as an effective team player
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience in effectively supervising others
  • Experience in effectively mentoring other employees
  • Strict observance and adherence to required and approved safety procedures
  • Familiarity with organic chemistry nomenclature and physical properties, agrichemical site of action and/or soil science, as well as skills in data management, modeling, visualization and interpretation are strong positives.
  • Knowledge of practical weed control or agricultural experience is also highly desirable
