    This position has dual responsibility for R&D project portfolio management and for providing oversight for research operations.


    In the role as R&D Project Portfolio manager, the incumbent is responsible for providing oversight and driving the portfolio of research & development projects to ensure the highest return for our R&D investment, to guide project managers to deliver a steady stream of high quality R&D projects and manage the multiple interfaces to engage key stakeholders in order to deliver business options to FMC and their customers.


    The successful candidate will also provide leadership to the research operations team provide support across R&D particularly for shared services, and includes contract research management, sample management, library services, capital equipment prioritization, and office and administrative support.


    Approximately 20- 25 direct reports


    The purpose of the project management team is to assure coordination of the cross-functional teams and completion of project deliverables according to promised timelines to deliver business results from pipeline projects. The project leaders are responsible for the success of the project. In addition to the project leaders, the resource management team maintains the project plans, assures resources and budget are properly assigned so that the project teams can meet business deliverables. The resource management process provides a link between the project teams and the finance budgeting, forecasting and longer term strategic planning processes.


    Responsibilities of the Research Management team include:

    • Contract Research Management: Manage the business processes of tracking global external studies. Work with Procurement to place studies at partner contract research organizations. Assures delivery of studies in accordance with project plans. Validates payments for work received.
    • Sample Management: Track, prepare, distribute, and ship samples in full compliance for R&D testing globally.
    • Library Services- Manages access to electronic literature for the R&D organization. Includes journals, patents, business literature, specialty publications, etc. Obtains necessary information for global R&D organization
    • Administrative Support- provides services to the R&D organization such as placing orders for research supplies, organizing meetings and travel, event planning, arranging office moves, etc.

    Required Education

    Graduate degree in a relevant agricultural sciences field preferred. (Biology, Plant Science, Entomology, Weed Science, Chemistry or Chemical Engineering related) with PMP Certification or Equivalent preferred. The new candidate should plan to obtain PMP certification during the first year if not already certified.



    • Requires 10+ years of relevant supervisory experience in the Ag sector with demonstrated project management experience to deliver projects on time and on budget.
    • Must have experience working with product development teams.
    • Ag background required.
    • Must possess strong understanding of financial expectations and business performance requirements.
    • Experience working with diverse, highly educated, technical professionals is required as well as ability to communicate with marketing and financial professionals.  
    • Proven track record of R&D leadership
    • Excellent project/program management skills including the ability to efficiently evaluate, prioritize and handle multiple and changing programs/projects and priorities.
    • Must have the ability to work independently to deliver on objectives when necessary, but also to team work with cross functional teams and work through influence
    • Independent ability to perform highly analytical and logical data analysis with strong customer focus and results orientation
    • Experience in product development and/or management
    • Should be experienced with agriculture business and strategic planning with a preference for incumbent to have participated as member of a research and/or business leadership team.
    • Market, product and distribution channel knowledge and experience a plus
    • Excellent people skills, including the ability to work effectively with all levels of organization’s employees.
    • The position requires strong initiative. Must possess self-motivation, enthusiasm and a positive attitude.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with credibility and professionalism required of a leader.
    • Demonstrated ability to communicate across disciplines successfully.
    • Strong analytical skills, able to quickly assess situations, recognize problems, and discern root causes, can separate fact from ‘noise’ and develop approaches based on true organizational requirements
    • Must have good judgment with the ability to think creatively and strategically
