    Overview

    Responsible for the safe and efficient day to day operations of plant process control systems, interlock systems, as well as troubleshooting and repair of those systems.

     

    Position will have one direct report, the Process Controls Technician.

    Responsibilities

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

     

    EHS

    • Installs SIS per safety analyses from PHA’s and PSI manuals
    • Responsible for completion of work orders for both electrical reliability and PSC/PSM compliance on electrical/instrument systems
    • Perform daily safety inspections
    • Serves as a site-wide Key Safety Procedure auditor and documents deficiencies in the implementation of those procedures
    • Intervenes when unsafe acts or conditions are encountered
    • Participates in incident investigations and Root Cause Analyses on highest risk investigations when needed

    Business Support 

    • Develop and design programs for PLC’s and DCS’s
    • Writes programs for process control support
    • Day to day upkeep of the process controls network
    • Support the production areas with programming and controls needs
    • Identify maintenance and upgrade needs for plant process controls and data historian systems
    • Execute projects to enhance and maintain process control network and data historian where needed
    • Support projects around the plant site to ensure consistency in process controls materials and programming are implemented
    • Maintain the most up to date versions of the process controls programs including all software and firmware updates
    • Specifies site electrical equipment
    • Identifies and implements Best Practices for maintenance of control and distribution equipment
    • Reviews electrical design drawings, equipment/instrument specifications, etc. to ensure quality of design, conformance to standards and compatibility with existing installations
    • Prepares detailed design packages in support of project needs.
    • Assists in capital budgeting process in support of operational area control needs
    • Participates in commissioning and start up activities involving new electrical components or systems, process controls or instrumentation
    • Support the maintenance and E&I technicians with troubleshooting
    • Responsible for completion of work orders for both electrical reliability and PSC/PSM compliance on electrical/instrument systems
    • Analyzes reliability issues and opportunities in order to improve plant uptime
    • Drives failure analysis of instrument & electrical equipment and implements reliability improvement action items
    • Develops preventive maintenance (PM) strategies to ensure reliable operation of process instrumentation and control systems
    • Develops instrument maintenance and reliability skills throughout the maintenance organization
    • Responsible to share technical input and know-how and experience with the Team
    • Responsible to participate in employee interviews and selection

    People 

    • Directs and supervises the activities of the Process Controls technician.
    • Identify training opportunities for area engineers and E&I craft personnel.
    • Responsible to work with E&I engineer and technicians in support of electrical controls engineering needs and objectives to include evaluation and implementation of new controls technologies and reliability strategies.

    Required Education

    Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering is preferred but equivalent work experience will be considered; which would include a minimum of six years of progressive process controls experience (DCS, program design).  

    Qualifications

    Knowledge, or experience, in the electrical field is needed.

     

    In-depth experience is required in the following areas:

    • MCC’s,
    • variable speed drives,
    • PLC ladder logic,
    • distributive control systems
    • process control instrumentation

    Prefer experience in these areas:

    • Chemical manufacturing environment
    • Project Management
    • An OSHA PSM environment

    Experience with these items is a plus:

    • motion controls,
    • Ethernet,
    • Profibus,
    • data historian
    • an ABB DCS system
    • Safety Interlock Systems (SIS)
